WAROONA SUB CENTRE NEWS

Saturday 4th December 2010 saw the morning dawn very windy as volunteers from different programs throughout the community gathered to enjoy a breakfast hosted by the Shire of Waroona and ably cooked by some of our local Councillors. It was quite entertaining to see some of our more well known Councillors pitching in and getting their hands greasy.

A highlight of the morning was the introduction of the Youth Contributing to the Community Award (YCCA). This is a new initiative by the Shire of Waroona to identify and acknowledge young people in the community who are contributing in a positive way to make our community a better place. The successful nominee will be asked to name a local cause or charity of their choice to receive a donation of $100 (sponsored by Alcoa). St John Ambulance Waroona were lucky enough to be a recipient of one of the first awards. Our greatful thanks go to Billy Harbour for nominating SJA Waroona and for acknowledging the work that we do. Also a big congratulations to Billy for getting out there and making a difference in our community.

General

In 2010 St John Ambulance Waroona did approximately 182 callouts which for the low number of officers we have is particularly good. I'd personally like to thank the few ambulance officers that have done jobs and made themselves available for public duties in the last twelve months. We don't get a lot of thanks for what we do but we do provide a vital service to the community and we should all be proud of the service we deliver.

New Volunteers

I'd like to say welcome to Lynda Leroy and Karlie Bartle who have both now received their Volunteer Ambulance Officer numbers. I have the honour of being their mentor through the first three months of their training and I look forward to helping them forward in their endeavours to become accredited Volunteer Ambulance Officers.

Senior First Aid Course

The next Senior First Aid course is being held on the 19th and 20th February 2011 from 8:30am to 4:30pm at a cost of $160.00. Call Carol on 9733 2122 to book your place as these courses tend to fill quickly.

"You may not have 40,000 fans chanting your name, or press photographers watching your every move.  But there is someone out there who owes you their life."

St John Ambulance relies on locals to volunteer their own time to run this vital community service.  To retain it they need people like you who care enough to get involved.
