WAROONA SUB CENTRE NEWS

Congratulations Murray Henderson!

Firstly a big congratulations to Murray Henderson, a long serving and valued member of the Waroona Sub Centre for being awarded "First Aid Trainer of the Year 2010" at the recent St John Ambulance WA Sub Centre Conference. Murray was originally nominated for the South West Region and ended up taking out the overall State award.  This award took into account the years of service and dedication in providing First Aid Training to the Waroona Community. So once again, Congratulations Murray. Your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated.

Waroona Show

Thanks to Andy, Mark T and Judy for doing an all day stint at the Waroona Show. Also thanks to Mick, Rodney, Glennyse, Murray and Mark W for putting in their hours. We were all kept extremely busy taking care of 26 patients throughout the day. I sincerely apologise to anybody that I may have scared whilst using the siren trying to get the ambulance through the side show alley crowd in the afternoon. However, I'd like to point out that if you see an ambulance coming towards you with lights flashing; it usually means "Don't stop and stare, please move out of the way QUICKLY".

The winners of our First Aid Kit raffle were: 1st Prize - Gino Vitale, Waroona; 2nd Prize - Kendall Evans, Preston Beach and 3rd Prize - Karen Kent, Meadow Springs. Congratulations to all our winners.

Community News

On Wednesday 27 October nine very lucky community members attended a Basic Resuscitation Course proudly supported by the Community Centre. The basic resuscitation course covers the D.R.A.B.C.D. action plan, recovery position, choking, recognise and manage heart conditions, CPR, external bleeding, legal issues, infection control, defibrillation and oxygen demonstration, and stress management. Here's hoping they never have to utilise these valuable skills in the community. A very scrumptious lunch was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to all those who took part.

Senior First Aid Course

The next Senior First Aid course is being held on the 13th and 14th November 2010. Hurry and call Carol on 9733 2122 to book your place as there are currently only three places left on this course.

General

The Volunteer Ambulance Crews have been kept working over the last three months having done 7, 10 and 8 jobs respectively over July, August and September.

Unfortunately over the last few months there have been a number of fatal motor vehicle accidents in the Peel Region. With the festive season rapidly approaching please slow down, don't drive tired, don't overtake on solid white lines and leave enough time to get to your destination so that you don't become impatient and attempt to do foolish things. No doubt in the lead up to Christmas I will be repeating this little spiel continuously as we have no wish to be busy over the Christmas period.

"You may not have 40,000 fans chanting your name, or press photographers watching your every move.  But there is someone out there who owes you their life."

St John Ambulance relies on locals to volunteer their own time to run this vital community service.  To retain it they need people like you who care enough to get involved.

  • Receive Training

A St John Ambulance Volunteer is an important person, someone who donates a few hours of their time to put something back into the community.

We are always looking for more people to help our small group of hard working ambulance volunteers. If you can spare some of your time to learn life saving skills and give something back to the community that you live in please feel free to contact our Secretary, Carol Racco on 9733 2122 on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 9:00am and 1:30pm or visit our website www.waroonaambulance.com.au
