WAROONA parents had the rare opportunity last week to learn life-saving techniques in a cost-free course adjusted to school hours.
Iluka Resources, which has supported the St John Ambulance Waroona subcentre in the past, sponsored the senior first aid course for all 12 participants.
Waroona first aid trainers Andy Templeman Twells and Murray Henderson taught a variety of skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and responses to medical emergencies before help arrives.
The three-day course had been specifically designed to run during school hours to make it accessible to parents of school-aged children.
"The response to the special senior first aid course has been tremendous," Mr Templeman Twells said.
" People were very grateful for the sponsored course that tied in with the school hours and allowed parents to acquire vital skills while their children were at school."
He said the course equipped parents with basic lifesaving skills that could save the life of a loved one.
Iluka community relations adviser Erin Davey said there had been a lot of interest in the free course and places had filled quickly.
Iluka hopes to run a similar event next year to give more people the opportunity to learn how to deal with emergency situations.
